The beginning of the year is such an overwhelming and exciting time of year for students and teachers. Choosing the best read aloud books can be a great way to start conversations with your new students and get to know them.

Also, building community is important in every classroom. When you read aloud books to your students, its helps you set the tone for your classroom.

Suggested Read Aloud Books for the First Week of School

There is so much happening in the first week of school. So, coming together to read aloud to your students is a good way to slow down, begin storytelling and sharing through positive classroom discussions.

Here are some books that I love to read at the beginning of the year. I love these books in particular because they really help me get to know my students.

How? I get to see if they have a sense of humour. It is also an indicator of whether or not they have relevant questions and are brave enough to ask them in front of their peers. So much is revealed in their reactions to each book.

Another reason I love these books is because they have a nature-based theme within them. Certainly, outdoor education is near and dear to my heart. Try these math activities with your class this week, right after you read a story! You know, any book about a seed, a tree, a forest or or a plant will definitely be on my read aloud book list!
