Cactus colouring pages are a huge hit at my house! It’s probably because my children know, just as well as my students, how much I love those plants. So if you’re looking for something different to do with your kids (or even just for yourself!), then this post is for you.
Although I have never tried colouring for meditation, I figure trying new things to help reduce stress could be beneficial. After aimlessly scrolling though internet page after internet page, looking for something that I wanted to colour, I decided to just make a picture for myself. Heck, I’ve got the time. And the sharpie.
Colouring to Reduce Stress
After creating several cactus colouring pages, I realized that I was onto something. It was a bit of an ah-ha moment. I was completely and utterly zoned out! Not thinking about online lessons or what to make for dinner, I came to the conclusion that colouring pages CAN actually lower your stress level. Did you know that while your brain is focused on colouring, it cannot be focused on stress? Here’s why that’s important. The amygdala – the fear centre of the brain – gets a chance to stop worrying for a moment.

Print the cactus colouring sheet that you want to begin with and sharpen your pencil crayons. The Zentangle method is an incredible approach that focuses on relaxation through drawing. There is so much to learn about creating a “tangle” that I couldn’t do it justice here. To learn more about Zentangle creation and how to become a Certified Zentangle Teacher click here.

Try the “Pick 3” colouring game with the cactus colouring pages. The way to play is simple. First, print off two copies of the same page. Second, lay out all the colour choices in markers, crayons or pencil crayons. Third, the youngest player chooses three markers without looking. Then the other player chooses their three markers without looking. Last, both players colour their page with the colour they picked. Want to know who wins? That’s up to you to decide.
